Our first LP release for 2003 comes from a longtime Capitalrecordings’ collaborator/friend/trans-Tasman e-mail buddy Mike Upton aka Jet Jaguar in the form of the delightful "Think About It Later" (CREC1009). This second long-player from Jet Jaguar, his first for Capital, was recorded over most of 2002 at Mike's home studio in Melbourne, where he's lived for the last couple of years. Several CD-Rs were bounced back and forth across the Tasman, two DATs were exchanged and a couple of thousand e-mails were written, sent and trashed, but the final product was well worth it. "Think About It Later" is a triumph of electronic listening music, combining the warmth of Mike's personality with the sheer number-crunching power of his mad scientist brain and downtempo music tastes. An supa-phat mastering job from DJ Mu (Fat Freddy’s Drop) adds an extra dimension of warm funk to the proceeding as well, giving Mike’s work a helping hand when it comes to rocking speakers off shelves.

A four-track 12" single will also be released shortly to allow those of a DJ-inclination to inflict the stuttering horns of "Ebo" and three other tracks on the unsuspecting public.

Mike has long been regarded as one of NZ electronica’s pioneers, releasing tracks as Jet Jaguar as far back as 1996’s “Skankatronics” compilation. Since then he’s had tracks on two Radio Active compilations, two Capitalrecordings’ “Earwork” compilations, Kog Transmissions’ “Dub Combinations”, and on other compilations for Golden Bay Records, Autumn Records, Interchill, Surgery Records and LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)roa.

Mike has also recorded as Datsun Stereo with his ex-flatmate Tarn McDonald and as part of Dub Connection with members of Fat Freddy’s Drop and The Black Seeds. Datsun Stereo’s self-titled four-track 12” EP was released by Capitalrecordings in early 2003, and there’s also a Dub Connection four-track 12” EP coming via Capitalrecordings shortly. Dub Connection and Datsun Stereo tracks have also appeared on compilations from Radio Active, Capitalrecordings and LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)roa.

As a remixer, Mike has pushed the audio envelope with his remodelling of The Black Seeds’ "Almost Home" topping the national Alternative Radio Chart for the first part of 2002, and being picked as a finalist for the new Best NZ Remix category of the 2002 b.net Awards. This remix, along with his take on Dub Connection’s “All The Goodness”, are available on LOOP Recordings Aot(ear)roa’s “LOOP Select 3” compilation from 2002.
