In mid-2001, three young men with quite diverse lives – apart from being very talented musicians - were brought together to form part of a band.
The dysfunction within said band was slightly more than anyone should have to handle.
Matt (bass), Adi (guitar & vocals) and Ants (drums) however, hit it off quite nicely.
Together, they decided it was best for the three of them to split off and form their own group. And thus, STYLUS77 was born.
In the intervening two-and-a-half years to now, STYLUS77 have quietly - and sometimes not-so-quietly - worked at their art and the craft of it.
They first generated a buzz in their homebase of Wellington with a two-track demo CD recorded with Mike Gibson at his famed Inca Productions in Martin Square during the winter of 2002.
“Goodbye” sat at #1 on Radio @ctive’s Top 11 for five weeks, and caused enough of a stir to make us here at Capitalrecordings sit up, take notice, and wave a contract around like a white flag : “You guys are amazing, we surrender! Sign here! Sign here!” Their mix of folk, dub, roots, soul, rock, pop and country was something that couldn’t be ignored by anyone with functioning listening and even a glimmer of taste.
Once we saw them play live, the capitulation was complete. STYLUS77 are simply one of the best live acts roaming New Zealand in this day and age. Their performances at Channel Z’s Little Day In in January, and the clean sweep of 2003 Orientation gigs up and down the country hammered this fact home to audiences.
Following nearly a year of work with Mike Gibson recording, overdubbing, mixing and then mastering in Sydney, “STYLUS77” by STYLUS77 is ready.
This six-track debut mini-LP hits shelves in all good record stores this October, and STYLUS77 hit the road this summer with a hectic series of live dates already planned in support.
STYLUS77 and their wagon are something to jump on early. These guys are set to blow up and take the whole country and world with them.
