"05" - Various Capitalrecordings' Artists
Since our first release in February 2002, Capitalrecordings has strived to live up to our ideal of style over genre, while at the same time creating a commercially viable home for artistic development.
With “05” – our fourteenth release to date - we’re proud to be able to reflect on our success as a business that exists to be a creative conduit and present a line-up of artists and tracks that are all taken from current, or soon-to-be-released, album and/or 12” vinyl Capitalrecordings’ projects.
The diversity of the music and the depth of talent it manifests from are a testament to the artists first and foremost.
It also illustrates the importance we place on maintaining close relationships with our people, whatever music they’re making and wherever they’re living, be it Te Aro, Lyall Bay, Grey Lynn, or even North Melbourne or West London.
Our sincerest thanks to everyone that has helped us on our journey so far.
The Video Kid – "Dawnskate-88"
The work of Black Seeds and Dub Connection member Bret McKenzie, this
track won round four of the M2/Jim Beam Video Grant Scheme late last year.
Along with being one-half of improv/stand-up/all-singing all-dancing duo Flight of the Concords, Bret also produces and engineers for a variety of Wellington acts. Schedule permitting, more solo work is due when Bret returns from his third visit to the Edinburgh Festival in October this year. This track is taken from Flash Harry vs. The Video Kid double A-side 12" (CREV1206).
DJ Vee feat. The Mighty Asterix – "The Best In Me"
One of Wellington's most sought after DJs, Vee's collaboration with NZ
reggae stalwart The Mighty Asterix was mixed and mastered at Ghuznee HQ,
and at The Drop with help from Mu and Toby Laing (Fat Feddy's Drop). Vee is
currently in the process of relocating to London for the rest of 2003, where
he'll be performing DJ support duties with Fat Feddy's Drop as well as DJing
in Spain and Italy with Mu. This track will be available as 12" single
(CREV1207) in the near future.
Audio Sauce feat. Miss Tick – "Covert Operation"
Following last year's "Diversecity" LP (CREC1003), Miles 'Audio Sauce' Tilly
has been busy tinkering with his as-yet-untitled follow up (CREC1008). This
track was recorded late last year with singer/MC Miss Tic, who also appears
on "Come and Get Me" from the same LP. Both tracks will be available on a
four-track 12" EP (CREV1205) alongside the popular "Bee Bo", the video for
which won Special Commendation for Animation at the 2003 Kodak Music
Clip Awards for its (first-time) director Paul Herschell.
Dastun Stereo – "4 My Pepys"
Not a spelling mistake, just an in-joke between creators Mike Upton (Jet
Jaguar) & Tarn McDonald and DJ Vee, who contributed cuts to this
instrumental hip-hop jam. Now based in Melbourne, Mike recorded this track
with Tarn in winter 2000 at their then flat in Wellington's Aro Street. This is taken from Datsun Stereo's self-titled four-track 12" EP (CREV1201), released late last year on Capitalrecordings.
Dub Connection – "Knokoder"
The fact that this EP ever got recorded or released is a feat in itself when you consider the band's members comprises six of the busiest men in NZ music
today, at least two of whom seem to be overseas at any one time as well.
Barnaby Weir aka Flash Harry (The Black Seeds), Tim Jarray aka Ray Ray
(The Smart Dogs), Bret McKenzie aka The Video Kid (The Black Seeds,
Flight of the Concords), Toby Laing aka Tonie Naironi, (Fat Freddy's Drop),
Lee Prebble aka Dr Lee (The Black Seeds) and Mike Upton aka Jet Jaguar
(Datsun Stereo) were all in the one place in late 2000 when these tracks were
recorded thankfully. This track is taken from Dub Connection's self-titled four-track 12" EP (CREV1204).
Mephisto Jones feat. Hollie J. Smith – "Remember Me"
Wellington-based producer, drummer and artist Otis Chamberlain had
developed a good reputation for his work with live outfit The Organics, and
also with Police Lucifer, before coming to Capitalrecordings to release his solo work as Mephisto Jones. This track, featuring Trinity Roots BV singer Holly J. Smith and guitarist Tehimana Kerr aka Jetlag Johnson (Fat Frddy's Drop), is taken from Mephisto Jones' forth-coming CD and 12" on Capitalrecordings, due for release at the end of 2003.
Jet Jaguar – "Ebo"
Wellington-born, now Melbourne-based Mike 'Jet Jaguar' Upton has long
been regarded as one of NZ electronica's pioneers, releasing tracks under
this name as far back as 1996's "Skankatronics" compilation. Since then he's
had tracks on two Radio Active compilations, two Capitalrecordings' "Earwork"
compilations and Kog Transmissions' "Dub Combinations". This track is taken
from the "Think About It Later" CD (CREC1009) and also appears on the four-
track "Think About It Later" 12" EP (CREV1203).
Stylus77 – "Good Things"
This Wellington three-piece have, in the space of just over a year, built
themselves a solid reputation as one of the city's finest live acts with their impeccably tight performances and singer Adi Dick's soulful, plaintive voice and lyrics. This is the first full-release appearance by Stylus77, coming on the back of their self-starter two track CD "Do What You Gotta Do/Goodbye" (the latter a former Radio Active Top 11 #1) from late last year. This track is taken from Stylus77's forth-coming six track mini-LP (CREC1010). A full national tour in support is due for Summer 2003/04.
The Phoenix Foundation – "Going Fishing"
After several line-up changes and an epic recordings, mixing and mastering
period of over eight months, The Phoenix Foundation have emerged – as
their name suggests – stronger than ever. The LP itself has garnered rave
reviews from those music journalists lucky enough to get sent a CDR, and
their recent live performances have wowed audiences in Wellington. This
track is taken from The Phoenix Foundation's debut LP "Horsepower"
(CREC1012).
Flash Harry – "I Love Lo-Fi" (50Hz remix)
Barnaby 'Flash Harry' Weir had carved himself a niche as one of Wellington's
best-loved singers due to his work with The Black Seeds, but his studio-driven work as Flash Harry surprised many with its multi-faceted, experimental attitude. His recent live-to-air on Radio Active with The Video Kid (The Black Seeds and Dub Connection's Bret McKenzie) showed he was ready to take Flash Harry out to a live audience as well, and a national tour is in the pipe for later in 2003. This track is taken from Flash Harry's "Flash Harry" LP (CREC1006) and was remixed by Jeremy '50Hz' Geor, who also mastered
the LP.
Tehi – "Grace"
Tehimana Kerr aka Jetlag Johnson from Fat Freddy's Drop is widely
respected in the NZ music community as one of the best guitarists around.
His work as a songwriter and singer however is only just coming to the fore.
This is the first appearance by Tehi under his own name and it also marks his
departure from New Zealand as he embarks on Fat Freddy's Drop's UK and
European dates for summer 2003. This track is taken from Tehi's forth-coming
CD/12" on Capitalrecordings, due on his return from overseas in late 2003.
